The Goal of Early Childhood Learning, Just This Much! - Advice from Parenting Mentor Dr. Oh Eun-young
As parents raising children, many of you have probably wondered, "When and how should I start my child’s education?" Here at Baby Pastel, we share the meaning of 'real early childhood learning' as explained by national parenting mentor Dr. Oh Eun-young.
1. Every moment of daily life is learning.
Is studying just about sitting still at a desk, holding a pencil, and memorizing letters? No, it’s not. From the moment they wake up in the morning to when they fall asleep at night, all visual and auditory stimuli and everyday experiences provided to children are the best learning processes for toddlers.
2. Learning through play is real learning.
Asking and answering the names of objects, learning the proper use and play methods of toys—every curiosity and exploration experienced in daily life is the correct way for toddlers to learn. Even in the moments of joyfully playing with toys, our child's brain is constantly learning and growing.
Checklist
- Let go of the stereotype that cognitive learning only happens at a desk.
- Use various experiences and stimuli throughout the day as learning opportunities.
- Naturally teach the names and uses of objects through play with toys, as if in conversation.
- When your child shows curiosity, respond kindly without annoyance.
Frequently asked questions
Is it good to start early learning like Hangul or numbers for toddlers?
During early childhood, exploring and experiencing the world broadly should take priority over simply memorizing knowledge. Instead of forcing letters or numbers onto them and causing stress, it is much more beneficial for brain development and forming a positive learning attitude to satisfy their curiosity through daily life and play.
What is the best way to study (play) with my child in daily life?
It’s best to have rich conversations using objects or toys that interest your child. Ask questions like, "What is the name of this?", "What color is it?", "How do we play with this?" and listen to your child's thoughts, allowing them to touch and feel using all their senses. This is the best way to learn during early childhood.
